Cedar Falls would provide ample inspiration for Bowers. The 1836 community was defined by the gentle flow of the Deep River and a host of small semi matching houses with a mixture of antebellum structures. The occasional sound of a church bell. The punctual daily call of a mill whistle mixed with the subtle cry of water rolling over an ageless mass of rock became the back drop for many drawing lessons.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA young Henry Bowers would set in his grandfather’s barber shop where he listened to tales of local legends. Unannounced to the budding painter the stories would become a vast inventory of local history. Bowers early attempt at painting was nothing more than a desire to put down a visual account of the small Randolph County village.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLocal folks started to ask about old pictures. “Did you ever here about” this or that? One morning Bowers received a phone call from a local resident. “Henry do you think the old Baptist Church can be saved?” The 1844 building had fallen into a sad state after being vacated for twenty years. Bowers knowing nothing about historical preservation promised to see if there was an interest in the community to at least try to do something with the antebellum church. Bowers helped organize the Cedar Falls Historical Society. After twenty years of fund raising and sweat equity the last standing antebellum cotton mill village meeting house in North Carolina was open to the public.
